If unfortunately you have to travel with a wait listed ticket in Indian Railways then there is a good news for train you and all other train travel lovers, just ahead of busy festive seasons as the IRCTC is working towards making the booking of train tickets easier.

Indian Railways going to provide confirmed tickets to passengers on the wait list, who are forced to travel with waiting tickets, on an alternative trains on the same route to make their travel smoother and hassle-free.

On November 1 the Indian Railways is going to launch the 'Alternate Trains Accommodation Scheme' (Vikalp). Under this scheme, a passenger who's ticket is not confirmed on a long distance train will be provided with a berth in an alternative train, travelling towards the same route.

According to the new system while booking tickets, a passenger would be allowed to select alternative trains they wish to travel, if in case their seat in the existing train is not confirmed. The option will be available also for passengers travelling from stations which are not origins or destinations.
As per the report, a circular sent out by Railway Board to zonal railways said that the scheme as suggested by Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) "will be implemented across mail/express trains of the same category, and no extra charges shall be taken from passengers, and no refund shall be provided for the difference of fares". Separate seats will not be earmarked for the scheme. The railways is preparing a list of trains and stations to be covered under the new scheme.

Generally the passengers like travelling in popular trains which makes special trains go vacant. Under the new scheme the wait listed passengers will be shifted to these special and newly launched trains to avoid over crowding in the trains. This will also help to low down the rush in a popular train in which generally waiting list goes beyond 300 during festive seasons. Once implemented this scheme will surely help in reducing the holiday rush in trains.

IRCTC has done some thing special for its passengers, it has introduced Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) system for IRCTC online ticket booking though Citibank. Indian Railway ticket booking on EMI is a beneficial for passengers who travels a lot or go on unplanned long distance journey and booking Tatkal tickets on premium trains. This year IRCTC has increased the fare of trains and booking tickets on premium trains become much more costlier due to huge demand during festival season. Also the booking tickets on EMI is beneficial for booking tourist trains offered by IRCTC at IRCTCrailtourism.
This new facility is not of much benefit to those who are not frequent travelers, although they can use the facility but it will create an extra burden on them for paying monthly installments for booked tickets.

    railway ticket booking EMI option
    Railway Ticket booking EMI option

IRCTC Indian Railway ticket booking on EMI steps and tips

    • The EMI facility for ticket booking is available only on IRCTC online ticket booking.
    • So log in to IRCTC website using your account.
    • Search for your train and plan your journey and make payment for your IRCTC reservation.
    • Now you will see an additional option of EMI payment besides the credit card booking, debit card booking and Net banking options.
    • If you click on the EMI option then you will be asked to share credit card details. After filling in those details, the entire ticket amount will be deducted from your credit card account and transferred to the IRCTC account. Then you have to pay that payment to the bank in monthly installments.
As of now the EMI facility is available only for passengers having Citibank credit cards. It is useless for a large number of people who don't have City bank credit card. Indian Railways has tied-up with Citibank to offer EMI facility for IRCTC online ticket booking.

There are only 12.3% Citibank credit card holders in India. The IRCTC should have tied up with other banks for offer EMI option. It needs to tie-up with more banks, the three largest issuers of credit cards in the country, which account for 58.9% of India’s credit card base especially HDFC, ICICI and the State Bank of India.
