The new Android app can be used using same IRCTC login details which are used to log in the IRCTC website. And new users can also create IRCTC account using the app. According to IRCTC the app will not be available during 8 AM to 12 PM. Users have to use the www.irctc.co.in website to book tickets and for other purpose.

Train travelers can search for trains and plan travel according to the seat availability and book their tickets easily with the app. Also the app will provide details for upcoming journey alerts and let the user to check existing bookings and reservations with an option to cancel them on the go.

Steps for booking Railway Reserved Ticket on IRCTC website from a browser enabled mobile phone

To IRCTC mobile login, open https://www.irctc.co.in/mobile in your browser.
Enter your existing IRCTC user id and password.
Click on Book Ticket and fill in details for plan my travel.
Select your train and continue the ticket booking.
Select passenger from existing passengers list or add passengers who travel along with you.

What is PNR and PNR status?

Indian railway assigns a unique number to each passenger when a ticket is booked. The full form of PNR is Passenger Name Record. Why you should check PNR status?

PNR status enquiry is mostly done to know the latest reservation status of a passenger or a group of passengers, by group of passenger we means that the passengers who are travelling in a group with a common ticket like members of a family.

At the time of booking ticket most of people don't get a confirmed reservation when ticket is booked. Such passenger usually get a waiting list or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) number.

By waiting list Indian Railway, means that a passenger with a waiting list number has to wait until some one cancel his/her reservation. The waiting list passengers are not allowed to board the train until they have a RAC or confirmed reservation ticket. The waiting list number of a passenger decrease by one when some one else who booked a ticket before you with same train and same class, cancel a ticket. The wait list passengers are moved to RAC reservation status and then to confirmed reservation status. The PNR status update and the process continues till the chart is prepared.

By RAC Indian Railway, means that you get a confirmed reservation when some one else who booked a ticket before you with same train and same class, cancel a ticket. A passenger with RAC reservation status is allowed to board the train and is allotted a seat to sit.

So, now we know that the reservation status of a passenger is not stable until he/she gets a confirmed reservation status and therefore it becomes necessary for a person with Wait list/RAC ticket to keep on checking his/her PNR status.

Any one who has been allotted a PNR Number by Indian Railway and has a pending journey can check his/her status. To check the PNR status only PNR number is required therefore any one who has your PNR number can check your reservation status.

Open IRCTC website www.irctc.co.in.
Enter your username and password to login to your IRCTC account.
Go to My Transactions menu, it is available on your left hand side.
Under My Transactions menu, select Booked History option.

Or a list of tickets will be available to you that you have booked recently. You can select your desired ticket and click on Get PNR Status button.
The current PNR status of your ticket will be displayed to you.

IRCTC Login is now supported by Captcha, now all users has to type a unique set of characters to login the NGET website.

All user's IRCTC account are being upgraded to the next generation e-ticketing system. Every user when log in first time to the NGET system get this message "Dear Customer, You have been successfully migrated to Next Generation e-Ticketing website. When you log in to NGET IRCTC e-ticketing system, there will be three options that is Proceed for Booking - Click on this if you want to book tickets, Update Profile - to update your profile and My Transaction - to view your previous tickets and transaction.

Tatkal Rules changes every budget, as per announcement made in the Indian Railway Budget 2013-14, following are the Tatkal rules of IRCTC.

The Tatkal Charges have been fixed as a percentage of fare at the rate of 10% of basic fare for second class and 30% of basic fare for all other classes subject to minimum and maximum as given in the table below.

The above charges will be levied uniformly both in peak period & non-peak periods.
Tatkal tickets will be issued for actual distance of travel, instead of end-to-end, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. The same Tatkal berth/seat may be booked in multiple legs till preparation of charts. At the time of preparation of charts, unutilized portion may be released to the General RAC/Waiting list passengers.
Tatkal facility is also available in Executive Class of Shatabadi Express trains also, by earmarking 10% of the accommodation available i.e. 5 seats per coach.
Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM on One days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey w.e.f. of 10.07.2012(commercial circular no:43 of 2012). e.g. for train leaving on 6th, Tatkal Booking will Commence at 10 AM on 5th.
No duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued. Duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued only in exceptional cases on payment of full fare including Tatkal charges.
Tatkal tickets shall be issued only on production of one of the ten prescribed proofs of identity shown under (as mentioned in Commercial Circular No.68 of 2012 issued vide letter No.2011/TG-I/20/P/ID dated 01.11.2012) as per procedure explained below:-
1. Voter Photo identity card issued by Election Commission of India.
2. Passport
3. PAN Card issued by Income Tax Department.
4. Driving Licence issued by RTO.
5. Photo identity card having serial number issued by Central/State Government.
6. Student Identity Card with photograph issued by recognized School/College for their students.
7. Nationalized Bank Passbook with photograph.
8. Credit cards issued by banks with laminated photograph.
9. Unique Identification Card "Aadhaar".
10. Photo identity cards having serial number issued by Public Sector Undertaking of State/Central Government, District Administration, Municipal bodies and Penchant Administration.
- For this purpose, a self attested photo copy of the proof of identity of anyone passenger shall be attached to the requisition slip.
- The details of the identity proof shall be captured by the system and indicated on the reserved tickets as well on the reservation chart.
- It will not be mandatory for the passenger(s) to go to the counter to book the Tatkal ticket, however, the proof will have to be sent in the aforementioned manner.
- During the journey, the passenger, whose identity card number has been indicated on the ticket, will have to produce original proof of identity indicated on the ticket, failing which all the passengers booked on the ticket shall be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly. Indication will come on the ticket regarding carrying the same original proof of identity during the journey, as indicated on the ticket.
- If the passenger whose identity card number is indicated on the ticket is not traveling, all other passengers booked on that ticket, if found traveling in train, will be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly.
Agents / RTSAs/Web service agents/Web agents of IRCTC are restricted from the booking Tatkal tickets between 1000 hours and 1200 hours. This restriction shall be enforced through frequent inspection at the counters. The agents both web service agents and web agents shall also be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets on the internet between 1000 hours and 1200 hours.
Even for internet booking for Tatkal tickets, the passenger shall enter the identity proof type and number, which is to be used for travel. These details shall be printed on the ERS/indicated on the VRM/MRM as well as in the reservation chart.
It will be possible to book a maximum of only four passengers per PNR for Tatkal tickets.
The web services agents of IRCTC will be permitted to book only one Tatkal ticket per train per day on the internet.
The facility of change of name is not permitted on the bookings made under Tatkal Rules
TDRs are not being issued for waiting list tickets.

REFUNDS

No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets/duplicate tatkal ticket except in case of circumstances mentioned in para 2 of instructions contained in Commercial Circular no. 53 of 2006 issued wide letter no. 2006/TGII/ 20/P/Tatkal, dated 30.06.2006. However, full refund of fare and tatkal charges will be granted on the tickets booked under Tatkal scheme in the following circumstances :-

If the train is delayed by more than 3 hours at the journey originating point of the passenger & not the boarding point if the passenger's journey originating point and boarding point are different.
If the train is to run on a diverted route and passenger is not willing to travel.
If the train is to run on diverted route and boarding station or the destination or both the stations are not on the diverted route.
In case of non attachment of coach in which Tatkal accommodation has been earmarked and the passenger has not been provided accommodation in the same class.
If the party has been accommodated in lower class and does not want to travel. In case the party travels in lower class, the passenger will be given refund of difference of fare and also the difference of Tatkal charges, if any.

IRCTC Destination Station Alert service has been launched by the Indian railways. The new service will benefit the passengers to know the when their destination station has arrived or when does a particular station has arrived. The same destination station alert service can be use to set a wake-up good morning alarm. The service will benefits most when the destination station arrives early morning when passenger are slipping and enjoying their dreams. Using the IRCTC destination alert service the passenger can request an SMS from IRCTC when their train reaches the destination station.

The process of setting destination station alert and wake-up alarm is very simple and there are various methods to do this. All the methods are explained below.

Tips and Steps for Activating Destination Station Alert on 139 IVR

Dial 139 from the mobile on which you want to set Destination station Alert.
Select your preferred language.
Then choose option 7 from the IVR main menu.
Now press - 2 for Destination Alert.
When asked enter your 10 digit PNR number.
Now press 1 to confirm your PNR number.
Destination alert will be set for the given PNR Number, you will also receive a confirmation message on you mobile as “DESTINATION ALERT call has been set on your mobile number for <Destination Station Name>”.

Steps for Activating Destination Alert with Assistance from 139 customer Service Executive

While talking to the Customer Service Executive, please tell your 10 digit PNR number.
Please reconfirm your mobile number on which you want the destination alert is to be set.
Customer Service Executive will confirm the destination alert has been set.
You will also receive a confirmation message on your mobile as “DESTINATION ALERT call has been set on your mobile number for <Destination Station Name>

Activating Destination Alert through SMS on SMS 139

You can also set destination alert using SMS 139 service.
JUST send following SMS from the mobile on which you want to activate Alert: ALERT<PNR NUMBER>
You will receive a confirmation message on your mobile as “DESTINATION ALERT call has been set on your mobile number for <Destination Station Name>.

Steps for Activating Wake- up Alarm on 139 IVR

Dial 139 from the mobile on which you want to set Wake-up Alarm.
Choose your preferred language.
Select option 7 from the IVR main menu.
Press - 1 for wake-up Alarm.
Enter your 10 digit PNR number.
Press 1 to confirm your PNR Number.
Enter STD code on which you want Activate your wake-up Alarm or Press (*) to contact IRCTC customer care executive.
Wake-up Alarm shall be set for the given PNR number, you will also receive a confirmation message on your mobile as “WAKE-UP ALARM call has been set on your mobile number for < Destination Station Name >”.

Step for Activating Wake-up Alarm with 139 Customer Service Executive

While talking to the Customer Service Executive, please tell your 10 digit PNR number.
Please reconfirm your mobile number on which Wake-up Alarm is to be set.
Customer Service Executive will confirm that the Wake-up Alarm has been set.
You will also receive a confirmation message on your mobile as “WAKE-UP ALARM call has been set on you mobile number for < Destination Station Name>

Please note- Call only from the mobile number on which you want to set Wake-up Alarm .

Applicable Charges for the IRCTC Destination and Wake-up Alarm service

According to IRCTC following call charges are applicable for calls received on 139:

Mobile: Rs. 1.20 for a pulse of 60 seconds for calls from Metro cities while for calls from non metro cities/areas the charges are Rs. 2 for a pulse of 60 seconds.
SMS: SMS (Pull) cost is Rs. 3 per SMS.

As per the report, a circular sent out by Railway Board to zonal railways said that the scheme as suggested by Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) "will be implemented across mail/express trains of the same category, and no extra charges shall be taken from passengers, and no refund shall be provided for the difference of fares". Separate seats will not be earmarked for the scheme. The railways is preparing a list of trains and stations to be covered under the new scheme.

Under the new scheme the wait listed passengers will be shifted to these special and newly launched trains to avoid over crowding in the trains. This will also help to low down the rush in a popular train in which generally waiting list goes beyond 300 during festive seasons. IRCTC eWALLET is a new scheme launched by IRCTC. This scheme allows users to deposit money in advance in their IRCTC account. The e-Wallet balance can be used to make payment while booking tickets on IRCTC website in addition of other payment options available. This scheme will help users to book ticket faster than before. But this scheme is not available from 8 AM in the morning and till 12 Noon. Therefore this scheme is not available for Takal ticket booking in the morning. IRCTC has done some thing special for its passengers, it has introduced Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) system for IRCTC online ticket booking though Citibank. If you want to book ticket for your whole family or a group of people then it is not required to provide identity card details of each and every passenger. Only any one passenger's identity card is required to book the Tatkal ticket. That is only one identity card per ticket is required.

Travel with a valid identity card

While booking Tatkal ticket at counter you have to provide your identity card to the clerk at the counter and while Tatkal ticket booking online, you just have to provide your identity card number.

It is mandatory to show your Voter ID card or the valid identity card you used to book Tatkal ticket while travelling in Indian Railway. Otherwise you will be considered as travelling without a ticket and liable for punishment and fine.
