IRCTC Vikalp | Alternate Trains Accommodation Scheme
IRCTC Vikalp is launched. If unfortunately, you have to travel with a waitlisted ticket in Indian Railways then there is a good news for you and all other train travel lovers, just ahead of busy festive seasons as the IRCTC is working towards making the booking of train tickets easier.
Indian Railways is providing confirmed tickets to passengers on the wait list, who are forced to travel with waiting tickets, on an alternative train on the same route to make their travel smoother and hassle-free.
On November 1, 2016, the Indian Railways has launched the 'Alternate Trains Accommodation Scheme' (Vikalp). Under this scheme, a passenger whose ticket is not confirmed on a long distance train is provided with a berth in an alternative train, traveling towards the same route.
According to the new system, while booking tickets, a passenger would be allowed to select alternative trains they wish to travel if in case their seat in the existing train is not confirmed. The option will be available also for passengers traveling from stations which are not origins or destinations.
The IRCTC Vikalp scheme has been implemented across mail/express trains of the same category, and no extra charges shall be taken from passengers, and no refund shall be provided for the difference of fares". Separate seats will not be earmarked for the scheme.
Generally, the passengers like traveling to popular trains which makes special trains go vacant. Under the new scheme, the waitlisted passengers will be shifted to these special and newly launched trains to avoid overcrowding in the trains. This will also help to low down the rush in a popular train in which generally waiting list goes beyond 300 during festive seasons. After implementation, this scheme is helping in reducing the holiday rush in trains.

IRCTC Shopping | Online Shopping Site Powered by Amazon
Last year the IRCTC had launched its e-commerce site in partnership with Yebhi.com. IRCTC’s online shoppingsite powered by Yebhi was hosted atshop.irctc.co.inand for sale of clothing, accessories, home decor, and electronics.
But the online shopping store of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has closed because IRCTC shopping portal private partner Yebhi.com not extending its contract. A year ago Yebhi and IRCTC started the online shopping portal to sell the products under the IRCTC shopping brand name with a revenue sharing model.
IRCTC had plans to convert its online ticket booking traffic into customers for IRCTC shopping portal.
Yebhi partnered with IRCTC assuming that they will able to convert IRCTC's huge traffic into sales but according to Yebhi.com, it failed to convert the traffic to direct sales due to poor conversion rates.
But according to IRCTC, it was just a one year contract with Yebhi. IRCTC gets close to 1.2 million visits a day on its site, generating 180 million transactions every year, the largest for any travel or e-commerce website in India.
IRCTC and Yebhi partnership was based on a revenue-sharing model where Yebhi was handling all the inventory of IRCTC shopping portal and sharing 2 to 10 percent of revenue with IRCTC.
The key reason for the closure of IRCTC Shopping portal is the space meant for promoting Yebhi products given to other advertisers. The online shopping e-store of IRCTC is not functional any longer, though the contract expires at the end of August.
But IRCTC has not given up and planning to set up IRCTC shopping portal with multiple e-commerce players.

BHARATQR Code as Payment Option on IRCTC Website
BharatQR code payment method is expected to go live on the IRCTC website within a month. It is a major revolutionary step because of interoperability. There will be one common QR code platform whether the payment is through MasterCard, Visa or RuPay. This will result in making payment experience much simpler and easier for consumers.
Talks with MasterCard and RuPay for this are in process. Visa is already included and mVisa ‘scan and pay’ option is already available on the IRCTC website. Currently, mVisa ‘scan and pay’ option is available on IRCTC payment page. mVisa is a QR code-based payment facility for Visa cardholders only.
Users who use bank apps like HDFC Payzapp or ICICI Pockets, it becomes very easy to just scan the QR code and make payments rather than entering the PIN number and the amount.
With BharatQR going live soon, there will be more banking apps which will be able to process QR-based transactions.
More than 15 banks are fully integrated with BharatQR, including Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank Ltd and ICICI Bank Ltd.
According to a report by IRCTC, the average daily sale of train tickets through the IRCTC portal, which is the world’s second busiest with more than 3 crore registered users, is around 5.5-6 lakh. It has registered a record 14,904 tickets per minute.
IRCTC offers various tourism-related services apart from train ticket bookings such as flight and cab/bus booking and hotel or lounge bookings.
In an attempt to popularize the use of QR-based payments, IRCTC and Visa have introduced a special offer for customers using mVisa (Scan & Pay) option on the IRCTC payment page which entails a discount of up to Rs50 for payments made between 5 May and 4 September.
